“One person is all it takes to make this entire online space worth it. To be able to change one person’s life is enough for me.”
- Ryan Raczkowski M.D., M.B.A
I chose to start “The Missing Degree” because I feel that the information here has the ability to change a person’s life. At least that’s what happened for me. One person was responsible for my journey into exercise and nutrition, arguably the greatest impact on my life. One person improved my financial literacy, something that practically did not exist as I was growing up being raised by two Polish immigrants figuring out how to build a life for us. And one person showed me how large the world truly is and how small our own bubble is, relatively speaking. The theme amongst all of these? It only takes one person, and only one step to start the process. It’s my turn to be that one person who is able to instill these concepts to hopefully improve your quality of life.
Being an emergency medicine doctor, I signed up for a life of helping people who I often see at their worst moment. Often, I can’t help but think what could have prevented them from being there. Did they have a “heart attack” because they were simply obese? Did they break their hip because they were just old and they fell? Or is this all just the result of an educational void surrounding the fundamentals of exercise and nutrition?
I see this almost every day. The average emergency medicine doctor will witness hundreds if not thousands of deaths during the course of their careers. For most people, hopefully it is no more than a handful. The field of emergency medicine is very much reactive. However, I believe the key to health is being proactive. Now more than ever, people are beginning to notice this but they don’t know where to begin. That’s where I believe I can make a change.
I want the initial focus of this website to be on health. Our system does not teach us enough on how to invest in ourselves. Most of the information we learn tends to be more useful for the people around us rather than ourselves. Part of the issue is the barrier of entry to “premium” knowledge and services. The other part is the growing number of “influencers” and companies that muddy the waters by complicating the basics of exercise and nutrition.
This website will tackle both components by making information free, and by focusing on the fundamental principles of the human body. This way you create a solid foundation of how your body works, and don’t get easily influenced by something that doesn’t align with how your physiology operates. As crazy as it sounds, many of us did not learn how to eat, how to exercise, and how to optimize our body to work for itself.
Over time, my aspiration is that this place will become an environment where we can learn fundamental lessons that are directly applicable to our mental and physical health, finances, self-development, and every day life interactions. This will be the focus of “The Missing Degree,” a space I created to discuss some of the more fundamental concepts that will truly follow you throughout your life. After all, to create the best possible version of the world, we have to be the best possible version of ourselves first.
